ORNAMENTAL TREES
While generally lesser in overall visual mass, height, and mature growth
size than most shade trees, ornamental trees add a special flavor to a landscape and are
every bit as important as their big brothers.
They may do this with the flowers they provide, the unique or interesting
growth shape they may exhibit, or perhaps the attractive fruit they bear which provides
both summer and winter interest. Some are available as single-stem trees, while others
have been grown in a multi-stem or clump form. Mill
Creeks offerings in this category will include:
* These trees exhibit varying degrees of fall foliage color, ranging from nice to
excellent.
EVERGREEN TREES
This group of trees carries year-round interest. During the summer they
serve as a nice green backdrop for our bright flowerbeds. In the fall they provide a solid
green setting to accent the color of the changing leaves on trees around them. Throughout
the winter they are very picturesque to look at, especially just after they receive a
fresh, clean, white coat of snow. No yard is complete without several of them!
Our evergreen tree offerings for 2004 will range anywhere in size from 8
foot to 14 foot tall, and will be available starting in late April. Come early for best
selection! Some of the varieties will include:
EVERGREEN TREES |
Norway Spruce
Serbian Spruce
Scotch Pine |
Blue Colorado Spruce
Green Colorado Spruce
Austrian Pine |
EVERGREEN SHRUBS
Like their taller relatives mentioned above, evergreen shrubs serve their
multi-season purpose as a nice green accent to other plants around them. Based on the form
of evergreen you choose, you can add a formal accent with some Boxwood, a nice hedge
effect with some Arborvitae, or plant some low-growing Junipers on either side of the
front walk and intersperse them with some flowering shrubs and perennials - theyll
always make a planting area look better, just by being there!
For your landscape designs, consider using some of these evergreens this
year:

ORNAMENTAL SHRUBS
Having fun so far? Now comes my favorite class of woody plants: the ornamental shrubs!
Aside from plants in the perennial category, this group of plants offers the greatest
diversity of features, of all the remaining plant classes!
There are shrubs that bloom with the most exquisite fragrances, shrubs that offer
superb fall foliage color, shrubs that will tolerate quite a bit of shade and still look
great, shrubs that bloom early in the season, and shrubs that bloom late in the season!
The list goes on and on, because there are so many to choose from!
Typically, these are deciduous plants, although some may have some degree of leaf or
foliage retention during the winter. Heres just a preview of some of this
seasons coming attractions at Mill Creek:

PERENNIALS
Our perennial selection planned for this year is going to be outstanding, and a wider
selection than weve ever offered before! When chosen carefully, perennials can
provide color in your yard throughout the entire summer.
Sometimes its not the flowers on a plant that provides drama and impact in your
planting beds, but rather the foliage. Hostas are the perfect example of this
concept. Mixing and matching blooming times, foliage color and texture, plant growth habit
- these are all variables that can make for a very innovative and uniquely designed
perennial planting!
There is insufficient space here to list all the perennials we are growing this year
(you have to come out and visit us to do that!), but let us tempt your taste
buds with these considerations:
