Spring has finally arrive here at
Millcreek...
WELCOME:
Between the cold, wet, chilly days we experienced several weeks ago and temperatures that
are now reaching into the 70s, spring seems to have definitely sprung! For all the
weathermen seem able to tell us, summer might be only a week away! Lets enjoy this
fleetingly brief season, while we can! As we go into another spring and another growing
season, the Staff here at Mill Creek Nursery would like to pause and say THANK YOU to the many customers who
continue to come back to see us, year after year, for all their planting and landscaping
needs. And also to those of you with growing families who have taken Mill
Creek Nursery with you from your first home to the next, over the years,
including us in your efforts to make each yard as attractive and enjoyable as you can. And
as your families have grown, so has Mill Creek.
The confidence, support, and trust youve placed in us, by including us, is one of
the nicest compliments that a company could receive from its customers. So, to you, we
once again say THANK YOU!
Our Spring Hours are now in effect. They
are Monday through Saturday 8:00 AM til 6:00 PM,
and Sunday from 10:00 AM til 4:00 PM.
Weve been very busy here at Mill Creek,
no matter what the weather has dealt us. Many changes and improvements have been made to
our Sales Yard to facilitate making your plant browsing, planning and purchasing
experience much more enjoyable. Youve got to come see it!
New pathways have been installed to more clearly define the different plant groups
along with signage explaining the growth requirements and habits for each shrub, tree,
ornamental, evergreen and perennial as well. We have a large selection of Ornamental and
Shade trees in the Sales Yard ready for your consideration. These include:
- Prairiefire and Robinson Crabapples with
flowers ranging from bright carmen-pink to a
dark pink with both varieties exhibiting
attractive purple to dark bronze green foliage
- Ornamental Chanticleer and Autumn Blaze Pear
trees are starting to open their flower buds and will look great during these first couple
weeks of May. And dont forget, both of them have FANTASTIC
fall color as well! These are always excellent selections in a landscape
design.
- Autumn Purple White Ash provide some great
shade during the summer months and color up to a rich
purple, burgundy in the fall; a nice alternative for those of you who
already have enough Maples!
- Weve also brought up some Ivory Silk Japanese Tree
Lilacs - Talk about fragrance! When these start blooming you cant
help but notice them - theyre wonderful!
- Consider a Green Mountain Sugar Maple for superior fall reds and oranges if you have a nice
well drained location in your yard. Its a newer, hardier variety of Sugar Maple that
shouldnt be overlooked!

All of these plants are above ground and are ready for new homes, possibly in your
yard! If youre unsure of exactly which tree or shrub would best suit your needs feel
free to talk to either Mike Greco, the
Owner, or David Sheppard, the Sales Yard
Mgr. They both have had years of experience working with landscape plants, and of course, Mr. Greco is a Licensed Landscape Architect and Designer
for those of you who are ready to tackle some landscaping projects. Were here to
answer your questions and be of help to you, any way we can!
Our 50 acres of fields are open to the public, to view our in-ground plants as well.
The benefits of selecting from hardy, locally grown stock is an opportunity you
shouldnt miss when it comes to landscaping your yard. We encourage customers to view
the plants in the fields at different times of the year, and see the changes occurring
seasonally. Personal, hand selection of your plants in the fields is encouraged, and
incurs no extra charge to you.
While at the Nursery remember to review many of the exciting new container-grown shrubs
that Mill Creek Nursery is growing this
year. The ease of handling and planting container-grown shrubs is worth considering.
This year Mill Creek is also offering many new and unusual perennials and annuals. Some
of these will be on display in the mixed container plantings that we will be presenting
for sale approximately May 15th.
While here, stop and talk to Mike Greco
about the hardscapes and stonework jobs
hes doing this year, as well as the design and installation of Water
Gardens, and their ease of maintenance.
SPRING AND SUMMER WATERING
CONSIDERATIONS
The winter just completed was very dry. We experienced insufficient
snowfall to properly protect plants, or raise our water tables. Inadequate spring rains
have also done little to remedy this shortage.
Looking forward, we are anticipating another dry summer, similar to last
year. Therefore, NOW is the time to begin
watering your landscape - dont wait until June or July, when new growth puts even
more stress on a plant that has been moisture-deprived since early spring. Remember that
it is important to water new plants, as well as established plants. Youve made an
investment in the plantings in your yard; now protect that investment. And if Mother
Nature decides to put in a surprise appearance with some well-deserved rain,
consider it icing on the cake!
